About Our Audiologist

Kearney Opticians now offers hearing care, in partnership with an independent, fully qualified hearing aid audiologist with over 18 years of experience.

Patients can be referred by their GP, recommended by someone else, or refer themselves directly.

"I just want you to know, my God the difference! I can hear opening a package now, I can hear the water, I can hear the chair move, I can hear when I am brushing my hair! I could never hear any of that before. It's just amazing!"

Hearing Tests

A hearing test is done by a qualified audiologist in a quiet room. You wear headphones and press a button each time you hear a sound. This shows if you have any difficulty with your hearing, and whether more investigation is needed.

Explanation of Hearing Loss

When should I get my ears tested?

You should get your ears tested if:

  • You often have to ask people to repeat themselves
  • You find yourself raising the volume of the TV to levels that are loud for others
  • You regularly miss parts of conversations
  • You experience a ringing sensation in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Others say you are talking loudly

Age-related hearing loss

Age-related hearing loss happens to most of us as we get older. It usually affects both ears and happens slowly, so you may not notice it straight away.

Can it be treated?

Hearing loss cannot be reversed, but it can be treated with hearing aids and other devices.

FAQ

What can help prevent or delay hearing loss?
  • Protect your ears from loud sounds
  • Do not put anything in your ear other than medicine from a doctor
  • See a doctor quickly if you have ear pain or discharge
  • Eat well and exercise, to help avoid conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Avoid smoking
What are the early signs of age-related hearing loss (presbycusis)?

Early on, you may hear sounds but struggle to make out words, especially somewhere noisy like a restaurant. You may also start speaking more loudly without realising it.

What care should I take when speaking with someone with hearing loss?
  • Face them while you speak
  • Make sure your face is visible and well lit
  • Do not speak with your mouth full
  • Speak clearly, but do not shout
  • Turn off the TV or radio to cut background noise

Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are not one size fits all. Each one is set up for the patient's own needs, and can be rechargeable or use batteries.

  • Completely in the canal (CIC): the smallest and most discreet option, made to fit your ear canal.
  • In the ear: good for mild to severe hearing loss, with room for controls such as volume.
  • Behind the ear (BTE): sits behind the ear and connects to an earpiece. Suits most types of hearing loss.
  • Receiver in canal / receiver in the ear: similar to behind the ear, but with a thin wire instead of tubing.
  • Open fit: a lighter version of the behind the ear style. Good for mild to moderate hearing loss.
